In an effort to get to know the talented individuals behind these brands, we sat down with each of them ahead of the initiative’s launch to learn about the motivation behind starting their labels, how they hope to grow and evolve over time, and their favorite BG memories. Bergdorf Goodman: Can you talk about the motivation behind starting your brand and how you differentiate yourself from other labels today?
Emily Bode: I began Bode with the intention of revitalizing American craftsmanship and storytelling. We differentiate ourselves through the focus on the narratives of individuals and the cultures and traditions that have shaped our lives.
BG: Are there any signature motifs/silhouettes/pieces/design elements that you feel are unique to your label? Why?
EB: The foundation of the brand is inspired by female-centric techniques such as quilting, mending, and appliqué. These historic techniques are intrinsic to our identity as most of our pieces are made from antique textiles. The narrative and storytelling elements are what set us apart in the industry.
BG: Describe the Bode customer to us and how you imagine they incorporate your pieces into their lifestyle?
EB: Our customers are considerate and invested in the traditions that have shaped their own families and lifestyles. Our pieces are comfortable and the Bode customer wears them with ease.
BG: How would you like to see your brand evolve over time? Are there any specific milestones you hope to achieve?
EB: Strengthening the archival aspect of the brand by creating a digital and physical resource for both our studio and customers, as well as the public.
BG: What is your favorite/first Bergdorf Goodman memory and what does the destination mean to you?
EB: My earliest memory from childhood about BG is making it a specific trip while in New York to not only go shop but to go see the window displays. Bergdorf Goodman is the epitome of the American luxury store.
